It is exciting to work with something for which science can not yet claim a unique definition… Light is a fundamental part of life. We intuitively perceive and experience our world through light. It influences our well being, it reaches our emotions, it inspires us.

At Steensen Varming our passion about light comes from the understanding of its deep connection to all being. We see light as a powerful means for communication. To realise and share a vision within any context, whether in landscape, in built environment or in art, the role of light is essential. For this communication to be “total”, lighting needs to embrace natural and artificial sources and their interaction with forms, surfaces and colours.

Steensen Varming’s lighting design philosophy is driven by creativity and backed by knowledge and collaboration. We have a progressive and open approach to design that is constantly in flux. We are continually investing in and researching aspects of lighting design, thus always learning and expanding our knowledge. This enables us to approach design issues with a unique methodology. Seeking inspiration from many sources and balancing a range of skills we dedicate ourselves to improving the understanding, appreciation and design of our visual environment.

We understand that there is no singular or definite approach to any design concept as each project offers up its own set of unique circumstances.  We see lighting as an integral element which should be tailored to suit the character and meet the specific needs of a project.

We care about the environment and provide advice on sustainable lighting schemes.

We follow a strict quality assurance program for design excellence.

We believe mutual respect towards each other and sharing the enjoyment of our work is a key in developing relationships with people we work with.

The pursuit of industry lighting awards is not our primary goal as lighting exists generally to either aid function or compliment the appreciation of a space or element, much of which we can not claim overall responsibility for. on the occasions that we do enter awards we ensure full support of clients, architects and artists and provide full recognition of everyone’s contribution, saying this however, we have won many awards.
